Career Center Secures $50,000 Grant for CDL Student Aid

The Washington County Career Center (WCCC) Adult Technical Training is thrilled to announce its selection as a recipient of a $50,000 grant through the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) Commercial Truck Driver Student Aid Program. This financial boost will expand opportunities for aspiring truck drivers in Ohio and support workforce growth in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

The grant is part of $2.54 million allocated across 33 schools in Ohio to aid students pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). These funds, awarded to eligible institutions through a competitive application process, will be distributed as grants and loans to in-state students enrolled in approved CDL training programs. The program aims to encourage job growth for Ohio’s commercial drivers through educational training and financial assistance.

“Governor DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly recognize Ohio’s importance in national logistics and shipping,” said Chancellor Mike Duffey of ODHE. “Commercial truck drivers are essential to a thriving economy, and student awards contribute to filling the pipeline for this high-demand occupation.”

The funding will provide financial aid to students who complete the CDL program and commit to residing and being employed in Ohio for a minimum of one year after graduation. This requirement ensures that the investment directly benefits Ohio’s workforce and economy.

“The Career Center is honored to receive funding from this program in all four rounds since its inception.  We are thankful that Governor DeWine and the Ohio Legislature continue to be supportive of our CDL program and recognize the critical role it plays in our economy,” said Evan Schaad, Director of Adult Technical Training at WCCC. “Our quality instructors have helped many students on their pathway to a rewarding career.”

The grant underscores WCCC’s commitment to student success and economic development. By supporting CDL students, WCCC aims to address the growing demand for skilled truck drivers, contributing to a robust workforce and enhancing the economic landscape of Washington County and the entire Mid-Ohio Valley.
