Adult Tech Offers New Program

Adult Technical Training bringing needed training to the MOV

The Career Center – Adult Technical Training, in collaboration with the Washington County Board of Developmental Disabilities (WCBDD) is offering a “no-cost” program to those interested in working with those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) requires 60 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of clinical time. The clinical time allows the student to receive hands-on training before the program completion. The curriculum, developed by the Ohio Alliance of Direct Support Professionals, allows the student, after successful completion to become certified through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities.

Erica Chidester, Medical Programs Manager at Adult Technical Training, elaborated, “This collaboration has been a year in the making, and we are pleased to partner with the WCBDD to bring this valuable training to the Mid-Ohio Valley.” She added, “Just in Washington County, nine agencies are hiring DSP providers. As a DSP provider, you will teach and support healthy and safe living skills, such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, dressing, and money management. As well as support access to transportation to appointments, community activities, leisure travel destinations, and so much more. Most importantly, you will help people lead fulfilling, self-directed lives. You’ll not only support others as they learn and grow; you yourself will develop valuable life-long skills through this journey.”

The DSP program begins January 24 and runs through April 11, with the class each Tuesday & Thursday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Classes will be conducted at the Adult Technical Training campus in Marietta. Tuition is at no cost to the student. Students must be 18 years or older and possess a high school diploma or equivalency. Clinical hours will be completed at local agencies.

This collaboration aims to help fill the needed employee gap for the agencies hiring DSPs. The program is accepting applicants from both Ohio and West Virginia.
