Career Center Names Students of the Month for May


The Washington County Career Center honors its May Students of the Month, Mikalah and Chiana.

Mikalah is a Warren senior enrolled in the Patient Health Care program, and she is the daughter of Stanley and Denise of Marietta.

At the Career Center, Mikalah is a member of the SkillsUSA youth organization and the Interact Club. Last school year, she competed in the SkillsUSA Regional Competition for “STNA”. She has received awards for Principal List, Honor Roll, Merit Roll, and the Career Center’s W.I.S.H. List for meeting all three criteria for 3.0 GPA or higher, 95% attendance or higher, and no office referrals. At Warren High School, Mikalah was active in choir. Through her technical program, she earned industrial credentials in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and State-Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA). She has earned certifications for Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Bloodborne Pathogens, Epinephrine Auto Injector, Oxygen Administration, and Professional Rescuer. Outside of school, she is a member of the Church of Christ, in Marietta, and is a youth counselor for their church camp. English instructor, Beth Spaziani, commented on special traits and roles Mikalah carries such as conscientious, great work ethic, focused, and proactive in her own study skills.

Mikalah is employed at Qdoba, in Marietta, as a crewmember. Upon graduation, she plans to attend Ohio University to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and go on to become a Nurse Practitioner.

Chiana is a Fort Frye senior enrolled in the Graphic Design & Video Production program, and she is the daughter of Bruce and Renay of Lower Salem.

At the Career Center, Chiana is a member of the Business Professionals of America (BPA) youth organization, Interact Club, Student Council, and National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). She hold the office of Chapter Vice President for BPA. As a Student Ambassador, Chiana is responsible for acting as a liaison between the Career Center and Fort Frye High School. In addition, she is gaining leadership skills by promoting the Career Center during its recruitment process as well as giving tours and guidance at scheduled events and with incoming visitors. She is on the Career Center’s Principal List, Honor roll, or Merit Roll, as well as the W.I.S.H. List in meeting all three criteria for 3.0 GPA or higher, 95% attendance or higher, and no office referrals every grading period. At Fort Frye High School, Chiana is a member of the National Honor Society and is a four-year Varsity letterman cheerleader and Captain of the cheer squad. She also was active for three years in the Cadets for a Cause organization to help raise money to fight cancer. For two years running, Chiana earned second place at the BPA regional competition, in the News Broadcast Team category, as the lead anchor. In her technical program, she earned college credit and industrial certifications in the Adobe Certified Associate: Digital Photography, Digital Video Effects, Digital Video Production, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Additionally, she earned both high school and college credit in American National Government, College Algebra, English Composition, Principles of Chemistry I & Lab, and Statistics. Chiana is currently working on an industrial certification and college credit for Adobe Certified Associate: InDesign. Outside of school, she raises Black Angus steer to show and auction at summer fairs and has won multiple awards including the highest award of “Premiere Exhibitor” on showmanship and 100% in the Skillathon. She is a member and teaches lessons for junior church at the Souls Harbor Baptist Church. Marketing & Events Coordinator, Penny Jenkins, nominated her for this honor and commented on special traits and roles Chiana carries such as kind, responsible, strong of mind, goal-oriented, great work ethic, focused, intelligent, giving, and helpful.

This fall, Chiana will be attending Washington State Community College, then transferring to Marietta College, with the goal of graduating with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She aspires to obtain an internship on the Today show and is excited for the possibility of living in or close to New York City.
